Running is great for your fitness and overall health, but if that's the only training you are doing, you are missing out. By looking through your whole kinetic chain, we can target weaknesses that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Strength and Conditioning can help improve your running economy and reduce the chance of injury.
Find out how to maximise your training and set a new personal best.
Running challenges many areas of the body, most notably the hips, feet and ankles. If these two areas are not able to cope with the forces you are putting through them, or they don't have the endurance to cope with your training volume, they can subject the joints above and below them to imbalances, as well as risk injury themselves. Through a tailored strength and conditioning programme, we'll target the areas that are weak and prepare them for the running that you do.
Our training will look different depending on the distance that you are training for. With the group of sprinters that I train, our biggest focus is on developing as much explosive strength as possible, whilst maintaining postural control - endurance isn't a big limitation in this context. With my clients that focus on longer distances, whilst we still work on strength and power, much more of my attention goes on maintenance of postural control, so that their running mechanics don't change too much throughout a longer run.
Strength training is often associated with increased muscular bulk, and whilst this is obviously a possible adaptation, we can also increase strength and power significantly without adding large amounts of muscle mass. When focussing on running, this is important, as we don't want to negatively impact your power to weight ratio or your running economy. When performing strength training alongside a cardio focussed programme, the cross-training effect negatively impacts muscular growth - this, combined with how we manipulate your session structure and rest times, means that we can tailor your programme appropriately.
