Strength Training is commonly recommended by Doctors, Physiotherapists and across mainstream media. There are a myriad of benefits, and it can be an important tool to help us maintain a healthy lifestyle. It can also be a daunting and sometimes confusing training modality, particularly when you're just starting out. There are lots of similar, but slightly different ways of manipulating the way that you load your body, and they will have different effects.Â

The fundamental principle behind why strength training works, is that applying mechanical loading to the body, stimulates adaptations within our cells - a principle called mechanotransduction. Adaptations are specific to the stimulus which is applied - The type of load (eg tension or compression), will affect the type of adaptation, as will the amount of load, the length of time the load is applied for and the speed at which it is applied. Depending on your desired outcomes, we'll adapt your training routine, manipulating the loading to give you the best results.Â

Following a generic programme may be fine for many people, but it may not be right for you. The aim of our training, is to build your confidence in a private environment, where you can learn to lift with correct technique and ask all the questions that you want, to help you understand why we're doing what we're doing.Â

FAQ
How often do I need to do strength training?
The answer really depend on your goals, but to make improvements in strength, you typically need to train 2-3 times per week. Some people like to do all their sessions with me, whereas I help others come up with a plan to fit into their existing routine and support them with as many sessions as they require.

Do I need to lift heavy weights?
Yes and no! To stimulate adaptation the weight needs to be challenging, but that is relative to your current strength level. The great thing about weights is that you can tailor the training to exactly the right level, so you can make safe progress as you improve. What you consider heavy on week 1, will be completely different by week 8.
Will strength training make me "bulky"?
Not unless you want it to. A lot of the adaptation that we get from strength training is actually neuromuscular, with your brain getting better at stimulating and coordinating your muscles. We can control variables like the number of repetitions and the amount of rest, to choose what adaptation we want to target, with nutrition playing a big role in this too. You can get incredibly strong without being visibly muscular, and whilst some people may be genetically predisposed to putting on muscle more easily, for most of us it takes a concerted effort to get this adaptation.
